On my TO DO LIST there is a permanent task – get back to blogging – and every day something creeps into my day to upset my determination to write. So I have decided that the wonderful news about the birth of Willliam and Kate’s baby is a good time to get back on the blogging wagon and write some thoughts about Shergroup, the world in which we work, and generally anything else that catches my eye!
So a Royal Baby – isn’t that just fantastic news for this lovely couple, their families and even the UK at large. Of course there are the republicans and the cynics out there who pour scorn on such good news – but to them I say “shut up” – we who like the Royals like the fact they have put a smile on so many faces and have the capability to do so much good in the world. That’s what I liked about Diana and in William and Harry and now Kate I see that real ability to connect with people who are often seriously disadvantaged and then to do something about it.
In my travels I am fortunate to see how the world views the Royals and us Brits and I think by and large it’s a positive view – certainly far more positive than the British press would have us believe. The American news channels are buzzing about the arrival of Baby HRH and all chattering about the British monarchy. It’s nice to hear a country which junked Royalty still see that connection between our history and theirs. I see that as good for Britain. I believe just like companies, countries need to have positive public relations and our Royal family just offers us acres and acres of great press based on our history, our ingenuity and our very real compassion for those less fortunate.
Of course there are the detractors and those with more sinister intentions. But that’s life – and for us positive Brits who are looking to expand our horizons and our opportunities we can use our heritage and British way of life to promote ourselves and our country which let’s face it – would fit into the State of Florida – with room to spare! As Brits we have plenty to contribute to the world – and this I believe is our opportunity. We may not be an America, or a China, or an India – but we have a unique contribution to make based on our language and our culture, which for many millions of people around the world is respected and enjoyed.
So I guess that’s the point of my blog. I will continue to write about where I came from (and this month I passed the 33 year milestone of being connected to Shergroup and having the opportunity to create a new sort of company) but also where I am driving Shergroup to succeed. In doing that I will share some insights on how we operate, and why I think we have something unique to offer our customers and stakeholders.
You might read it as crowing – I have my detractors as every CEO does – but I see it more of putting out there why I do what I do and why I believe in my company. I mean after 33 years of doing something you had better believe you are doing the right thing or you might as well give up. As there’s no chance of that – must be the Scot in me – I will finish by saying that my writer’s block has been lifted and I have started blogging again.
So thank you Baby HRH for reminding why it’s great to be a Brit and why the whole planet is celebrating your birth – you will be a force for good in the world – and we all wish you a blessed and happy life.
